If you are a non-smoker, the safest way to avoid passive smoke is not to allow others to smoke in your home
[30] It is possible that oxidative damage to protein and lipid constituents may explain the way in which cigarette smoke affects plasma LDL and HDL

This is the case even when other factors have been taken into account.8 On an average, smokers have more complications of pregnancy and labour which can include bleeding during pregnancy, premature detachment of the placenta and premature rupture of the membranes.27 Some studies have also revealed a link between smoking and ectopic pregnancy 10 and congenital defects in the offspring of smokers.28 The Hazards of Passive Smoking Non-smokers who are exposed to passive smoking in the home, have a 25 per cent increased risk of heart disease and lung cancer.29 A major review by the Government-appointed Scientific Committee on Tobacco and Health (SCOTH) in the UK concluded that passive smoking is a cause of lung cancer and ischaemic heart disease in adult non-smokers, and a cause of respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis, pneumonia and bronchiolitis, cot death, middle ear disease and asthmatic attacks in children.30 More than one-quarter of the risk of death due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (cot death) is attributable to maternal smoking (equivalent to 365 deaths per year in England and Wales.31 While the relative health risks from passive smoking are small in comparison with those from active smoking, because the diseases are common, the overall health impact is large
