As part of the greater Guyana Shield or 'Lost World', this part of the region is a largely seasonally flooded savannah with granitic inselbergs, or outcrops of granitic rock called 'lajas' locally. These rock islands hold a high degree of endemic flora and among them the Pitcairnia pruinosa. Very un Pitcairnia like with broad, stiff,
